‘Lifelong learning matters’

If you haven’t felt the energy at our Education Center at Master the Possibilities this term, you have missed something truly special because “Exploring 250 Years of America with MTP” hasn’t just been a theme, it has been an experience.

This curriculum has come alive in ways that remind us why lifelong learning matters. With an incredible lineup of history focused courses and special presentations, we have taken our students on a journey from the founding of our nation to the world we live in today.

From powerful presentations on influential leaders and defining moments to deeper dives into topics like wartime America, civil rights and Florida’s own history, every class has offered a new perspective. 

What I’ve loved most, though, is the excitement. You can feel it the moment you walk into a classroom. Students are asking questions, sharing insights and connecting what they’re learning to their own experiences. Our instructors and speakers have brought passion, depth and creativity to every session, and together they have created something truly special. This has been a celebration of learning, community and curiosity.

And the momentum continues into May with some outstanding events you won’t want to miss.

On May 4, we kick things off with our special presentation on the 19th Amendment: How Women Won the Vote Virtual Tour at the National Constitution Center. This event will take place in Live Oak Hall and offers a wonderful opportunity for participants to get a live, virtual, docent-led tour of the newest exhibit that highlights this period in history. The cost for members to attend is $8 and it is $13 for the general public.

As a guest presenter on May 5, Geoffrey Wawro will give an eye-opening session that explores new perspectives on the Vietnam War in “Reassessing Vietnam: New Revelations.” Wawro is the University Distinguished Research Professor and Founding Director of the Military History Center at the University of North Texas. He is a regularly appearing expert on outlets like the History Channel, Netflix and Discovery. The cost to attend this rare appearance lecture is $8 for members and $13 for the general public.

Our May 11 presentation not only is theme-related, but anniversary significant also. Join us for “A Virtual Tour of the 9/11 Memorial and Museum” on the 25th anniversary year. This moving experience brings the memorial to life through guided storytelling and visuals, honoring the lives lost and the resilience that followed. Don’t miss this 3 to 4 p.m. presentation in Live Oak Hall. The cost to attend is $8 for members and $13 for the general public.

Finally, on May 25, attend the Memorial Day Tribute starting at 8 a.m. at the Veterans Park. Co-sponsored with the On Top of the World Recreation Center, this special event honors the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. It is a meaningful way for our community to reflect, remember and show gratitude. There is no cost to attend this event, but registration is required.
