Mississippi kite

These elegant raptors arrive in central Florida in April and return to South America for the winter in August. They’re typically seen soaring effortlessly in thermals, almost never perched. They feed on flying insects but sometimes descend for a tasty frog or lizard. From below, they are mostly gray with dark tails and narrow, pointy wings. This one was photographed at the Florida Horse Park.
