Two people died and an adult and two toddlers were injured when the van they rode in collided with a semi-trailer and then struck several trees along Interstate 75, the Florida Highway Patrol reports.

According to an FHP press release, a van, driven by a 49-year-old Miami man, was traveling southbound in the middle lane of I-75 at the 365 mile marker at 10:20 a.m. when for “unknown reasons” the van moved to the outside lane and the van’s rear struck the left front tire of a southbound semi-trailer.

The  semi-trailer was driven by a 60-year-old man from Douglasville, Georgia and the FHP press release described the collision as  a “minor impact.”

Florida Department of Transportation information online puts County Road 318 at mile marker 368 with mileage of decreasing southward.

Following the impact, the van left the roadway, struck several trees and was “engulfed in flames,” the press release stated.

Occupants of the van included the driver and a  15-year-old girl who both died in the crash; a 23-year woman who suffered serious injuries; a two year old boy and one year old girl both suffered minor injuries, the press release stated.

All occupants of the van were listed as residents of Miami and it was unknown if the two victims or the injured adult wore seats. Both children were restrained, according to the press release.

The semi-trailer driver was not injured and he was wearing a seat belt.
