Twenty-one horses have died early Tuesday morning as a result of a barn fire in Reddick, according to Marion County Fire Rescue.

A single-story barn structure caught fire in the early morning hours of April 8, causing the roof to collapse and killing 21 horses stored inside.

The fire department was dispatched at 3:58 a.m. The first unit from MCFR Lowell Station 11 arrived at 4:13 a.m. to the scene on Northwest 118th Street in Reddick, but the roof of the barn had already collapsed upon their arrival.

“The fire was called under control at 5:13am. No injuries were reported to civilians or firefighters at the scene,” wrote MCFR.

The incident will be investigated by both the Marion County Fire Marshall’s Office and the Florida Bureau of Fire, Arsons and Explosives Investigators to determine the cause of the fire.
