A plan that would allow the expansion of the Rooms To Go location on State Road 200 was approved by the Ocala City Council on Tuesday.

The council voted 5-0 to change the zoning of the current site of the store at 2832 SW SR 200 and the neighboring vacant parcel at 2800 SW SR 200 to shopping center.

The move allows for a retail location larger than 35,000 square feet on the combined nearly 7.5 acres.

The current building occupied by the furniture retailer is approximately 26,700 square feet, according to property appraiser records.

The vacant lot was the former location of Toys R Us, which closed in 2018. The building, which went up in 1990, was torn down in May 2019.

RTG Ocala Properties acquired the 5.23 acres in April via a special warranty deed, according to county records.

The property is adjacent to the 2.47 acres where the furniture store now stands. That building went up in 2006.

The plans for the expansion were not immediately revealed.

A standalone Rooms To Go Kids located nearby at 3701 SW SR 200 closed previously.

Rooms to Go, based in Seffner near Tampa, is the nation’s largest independent furniture retailer with more than 150 showrooms in 10 states throughout the Southeast and in Texas.

The company recently introduced 50,000-square-foot superstores to Tampa and Orlando that include Rooms To Go, Rooms To Go Kids and Rooms To Go Patio under one roof.
