A suspect in law enforcement custody died early Friday in a local hospital after he struggled with a Florida Highway Patrol trooper who shot the suspect resulting in his death, according to a press release from the Ocala Police Department.

OPD units responded to HCA Florida Hospital at 1431 S.E. 1st Ave. at 2:51 a.m. Friday in response to an OPD detail officer at the location needing assistance, the press release stated.

The suspect is described only as a white adult male and no information was immediately available about the firearm or how the struggle started.

“No law enforcement officers or hospital staff were injured. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement was requested by the FHP to investigate the officer-involved shooting,” the OPD press release stated.

An email to the FDLE was not immediately returned.
