The Florida Teen Safe Driving Coalition has issued information related to a new state law that will take effect on July 1 for which Florida teens ages 15 to 17 will be required to complete a state-approved driver’s education course before they can obtain a learner’s permit.

“This new law, signed by Governor Ron DeSantis, aims to enhance road safety by ensuring young drivers receive comprehensive training early on,” the news release stated.

Previously, teens only needed to complete a Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education course. Under the new law, they must now complete a full driver’s education course approved by the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.

They also must pass vision and hearing tests and a knowledge exam and submit a parental consent form.

They must hold the learner’s permit for at least 12 months or until they turn 18 before qualifying for a driver’s license.

“All of our high schools offer driver’s education courses during the regular school year. We also offer it during summer school and typically have at-capacity classes,” noted Kevin Christian, director of public relations for Marion County Public Schools.

Florida Virtual School also offers the driver’s education course online.
