The musician Jimmy Buffett died nearly five months ago. But during Jimmy Buffett Day at the Florida Capitol on Thursday, lawmakers moved forward with bills that could honor him long into the future. The House Transportation & Modals Subcommittee unanimously approved a bill (HB 91) that would designate Florida A1A from Monroe County to Nassau County as “Jimmy Buffett Memorial Highway.” The panel also approved a bill (HB 403) that would create a “Margaritaville” specialty license plate. The Senate also passed a resolution honoring the singer, and a member of Buffett’s Coral Reefer Band played several songs in the Capitol courtyard. “My hope is that, through this license plate and through this road, his music and his books and his families and his hotels and everything else, that he will continue to inspire us to see the good side and live life like a song,” said Savannah Buffett, one of his daughters. Buffett died Sept. 1 at age 76 of a type of skin cancer.
