Master the Possibilities, one of Florida’s leading lifelong learning centers, is shining a spotlight on its diverse lineup of American history courses as part of this term’s theme, “Exploring 250 Years of America.”

The theme recognizes the upcoming 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding and encourages students to engage with the stories, triumphs, conflicts and cultural forces that have shaped the United States since 1776.

With nearly 60 history courses offered this term, MTP provides one of the most varied and accessible history catalogs for adult learners in the region. Programs feature university scholars, published authors, veteran educators, researchers and living-history interpreters who specialize in bringing America’s past to life.

Courses aligned with the “Exploring 250 Years of America” theme cover a wide range of topics, including early colonial settlements, Revolutionary War leadership, westward expansion, Reconstruction, the rise of industrial America, the civil rights era, presidential legacies and pivotal moments such as Watergate, the moon landing, 9/11 and more.

Learners can also explore deeper narratives such as:

  • Florida’s earliest colonies and territorial history
  • Native American and Seminole perspectives
  • The evolution of American industry and transportation
  • The Cold War, Vietnam and modern global conflicts
  • Women pioneers, aviators and cultural trailblazers
  • Political transformations from the Founding Era to today

Additional courses branch into world history, allowing students to see how global events, from Viking migrations to modern Russian politics, intersect with the American experience.

“Our goal this term is to help students make meaningful connections between America’s past and the world they live in today,” said Michelle Shideler, director of education at Master the Possibilities. “The 250th anniversary is more than a historical milestone, it’s an opportunity to reflect, learn and engage with the stories that continue to shape our communities and our nation.”

Master the Possibilities is a not-for-profit lifelong learning center serving thousands of adult students throughout Marion County and beyond. The center provides high-quality instruction and enriching learning experiences that inspire adults to explore their interests, uncover their passions and apply their talents to make meaningful, positive changes in their lives and throughout the community.

All history courses are open to the public and available to new and returning students. Seats fill quickly, so early registration is encouraged.
