Hermit thrush

One of the joys of a solitary walk in the woods is to engage in a staring contest with a hermit thrush. They typically hop along the underbrush, but when they encounter a hiker they will often take up a perch on a low branch and sit very still. Listen for a glass, high-pitched song. They’re seen in Marion County between October and April.
