A 27-year-old man was arrested on Thursday, accused of the shooting death of Sherman Samuels, 32, according to Ocala Police Department reports.

Tyre Patrick Meggie, was arrested at the Sleep Inn & Suites at 13600 SW 17th Court, after police identified him as a suspect in the shooting, according to reports.

Samuels was found dead in a red car that came to rest in a retention pond behind the Economy Inn on the 3500 block of West Silver Springs Boulevard. He was shot once in the back of the head, reports state.

Investigators spoke to a witness that was also in the car who said Meggie was sitting behind Samuels when he saw the gunman point a handgun wrapped in a red cloth at the back of Samuel’s head and fire. After the car came to a stop, those in the car ran in different directions. The witness said he heard a second gunshot, reports state.

Using witness testimony, along with surveillance video, detectives identified Meggie. Officers eventually found him in the motel room’s bathtub, suffering from a gunshot wound to his leg. He was drifting in and out of consciousness when he was arrested, according to reports.

Meggie was taken to a local hospital to be treated for the gunshot wound he received days prior, according to police.

He was charged with second-degree murder with a firearm.

The reason for the shooting was not immediately clear and neither were the circumstances behind Meggie’s gunshot wound.

OPD asks anyone with information about the case to call 352-369-7000 or submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers of Marion County at 352-368-STOP.
