2021-22 High School Boys Basketball Preview

Winter sports are set to begin this month for local high schools in Marion County—private and public alike—including boys’ basketball.

Here is a brief preview of all 10 schools, their district makeup and how they all faired last year, as well as what’s on the horizon for the 2021-22 season.

 

 

Belleview Rattlers

District: 5A-5 (along with Citrus, Lake Weir, Lecanto, Leesburg, Springstead and Vanguard)

Head Coach: Jason Hasson, 1st Season

Last Season: 16-7 overall record 

 

Dunnellon Tigers

District: 4A-4 (along with Eastside, Keystone Heights, North Marion, Palatka and Santa Fe)

Head Coach: Melissa Mosby, 4th Season

Last Season: 5-18 overall record 

 

Forest Wildcats

District: 6A-3 (along with Buchholz, Columbia, Fleming Island and Gainesville)

Head Coach: Mike Hoffmann, 1st Season

Last Season: 18-8 overall record (Region 6A-1 champion, Class 6A Final Four)

 

Lake Weir Hurricanes

District: 5A-5 (along with Belleview, Citrus, Lecanto, Leesburg, Springstead and Vanguard)

Head Coach: Mike Surber, 6th Season

Last Season: 4-16 overall record

 

North Marion Colts

District: 4A-4 (along with Dunnellon, Eastside, Keystone Heights, Palatka and Santa Fe)

Head Coach: Timothy Yarn, 7th Season

Last Season: 8-10 overall record 

 

Vanguard Knights

District: 5A-5 (along with Belleview, Citrus, Lake Weir, Lecanto, Leesburg and Springstead)

Head Coach: Todd Davis, 4th Season

Last Season: 6-8 overall record

 

West Port Wolf Pack

District: 7A-2 (along with DeLand, Flagler Palm Coast, Spruce Creek and University (Orange City))

Head Coach: Bernard Smith, 1st Season

Last Season: 9-13 overall record

 

Ocala Christian Academy Crusaders

Florida Christian League: South (along with Cornerstone Academy, Countryside Christian, Dade Christian, Greenacres Christian, Meadowbrook Academy and Peniel Baptist Academy)

Head Coach: Mac McCray, 5th Season

Last Season: 7-6 overall record 

 

St. John Lutheran Saints

District: 2A-5 (along with First Academy-Leesburg, Meadowbrook (Ocala), Mount Dora Christian and Redeemer Christian (Ocala))

Head Coach: Jai Rivero, 3rd Season

Last Season: 6-12 overall record

 

Trinity Catholic Celtics

District: 3A-3 (along with Crescent City, Crooms, Father Lopez, The Masters Academy and Trinity Preparatory) 

Head Coach: Carlos Villalobos, 6th Season

Last Season: 7-13 overall record
