A 73-year-old Ocala man died Thursday (Sept. 12) when the car he was driving left northeast State Road 35 (Baseline Road) and struck a tree, the Florida Highway Patrol reports.

According to an FHP press release, the victim, the only occupant, was driving a Toyota Corolla southbound on SR 35 just south of Northeast 24th around 4:57 p.m. when the vehicle left the roadway and traveled on the west grassy shoulder to a wood line where the front of the vehicle struck a tree.

The victim, who was wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced deceased at the scene by Marion County Fire Rescue, the release stated.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
