Growing number of Marion County residents lose power as Hurricane Milton approaches

About 7,000 customers in Marion County are out of power, as of 6:46 p.m., according to Find Energy.

Of those customers, 4,301 are SECO Energy, 1,776 are Duke Energy, 902 are Clay Electric Cooperative and 19 are Ocala Electric Utility.

Significant impacts to the region from Hurricane Milton are expected Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

Hurricane Milton remains very powerful at category 3 strength on the Saffir-Simpson scale, moving northeast at 17 mph and forecast to approach the Florida west coast by late this evening. Milton will maintain hurricane strength as it moves northeastward across the Florida Peninsula late tonight through Thursday morning, creating dangerous conditions across northeast Florida and the southeast Georgia coast, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Rainfall totals of 5 to 10 inches are expected in Marion County.
